When a person first comes across the term Tabloid Laser Printer, the most common response is to question what the term ‘Tabloid’ actually means.
Tabloid Laser Printers are a type of wide or large format laser printer that are capable of printing on paper up to and including the following dimensions:
- The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) specifies a size of 11 x 17 inches (279 x 432 mm with an aspect ratio of 1.5455) and is known as ANSI B, B or Tabloid Size. Ledger size is 17 x 11 inches i.e. a rotated version of Tabloid Paper Size, therefore a Tabloid Laser Printer is sometimes referred to as a ANSI B, B, 11 x 17 or even a Ledger laser printer.
- ANSI and ISO (International Organization for Standardization) represent the 2 most common standards in use today worldwide concerning paper size. The ISO equivalent to Tabloid Size is known as A3 and has a size of 11.69 x 16.54 inches (297 x 420 mm with an aspect ratio of 1.4142).
Fortunately, most modern wide format printers can print in both Tabloid and A3 formats. This minimizes potential document compatibility issues resulting from differences in size between ANSI and ISO standards and is of particular importance with regard to business relationships between North America/Canada and the International community.
